Bill allowing trial in absentia likely to be first organic law out | Bangkok Post: news

The bill endorsing trial in absentia for politicians will likely be the first organic law to be enacted after constitutional writers did not object to the revised version approved by the National Legislative Assembly (NLA). The Constitution Drafting Committee on Monday decided not to challenge the NLA-approved version of the bill on criminal cases against politicians. After this, the NLA may send the bill to the prime minister to seek royal endorsement. The constitution writers’ decision eliminated the steps required when they, lawmakers and affected agencies have different views on laws. The steps include the setup of a joint panel to find common grounds and a five-day window of appeal while the prime minister holds the bill before sending it to His Majesty the King.
